About the Department:
Primary Goal: Identify and protect the rights of crime victims and witnesses. We strive to get the victim's life back to pre-crime status. The program will ensure the victim's rights will be treated with dignity, compassion, and respect during the course of criminal proceedings.
We also are available to provide the victim and witness with a full range of free services. At Crime Victim Services, we work with the District Attorney's Office to do the following:
· To inform the victim of the criminal justice process
· Provide emotional support during court proceedings
· Assist in obtaining reparations for economic loss (Restitution)
· Keep them notified of the status and final disposition of their case

A referral system has been set up to direct the victim to other community resources and social service agencies for additional help, for example:
· MH Health
· Clear Concepts
· State Health Center
· Area Agency on Aging
The Crime Victim Compensation Board is a state agency which reimburses crime victims for out-of-pocket expenses, loss of earnings, or funeral and burial costs. Crime Victim Services will assist victims in applying for compensation.
Appropriate consideration of the victim’s rights results in better cooperation with law enforcement, help to restore the victim’s confidence and, therefore, makes the system work more effectively. |
