The Prothonotary/Clerk of Courts is the keeper of the Courts civil and criminal records.
The Prothonotary is responsible for filing: Complaints; Mortgage Foreclosures; Divorce Complaints; Custody Complaints; PFA's; Petitions; Motions; Court Orders; Judgments; Road Docket Matters, such as Eminent Domain and Declaration of Taking. The Prothonotary collects costs associated with PFA's; Court ordered evaluations and costs that may be imposed by the Judge. The Prothonotary is given orders authorizing the issuance of bench warrants for civil and criminal matters.
The Clerk of Courts is responsible for filing: new court cases transferred from the Magisterial District Judge; anything associated to criminal matters in the Court of Common Pleas. The Clerk of Courts is also responsible for collecting criminal costs, fines, and restitution. The Clerk of Courts is also responsible for posting bail for the Court of Common Pleas.
The office also issues oaths, writs, and passports.
